Forgive the lack of D.O.T.D posts. I’ve been busy enjoying fatherhood and neglected ye old blog.
A few backs, our son Liam turned one. He had three amazing birthday parties in Utica, Rensselaer and down in the Outer Banks, NC (Duck exactly). Without question, Liam partied hard and received tons of well wishes and awesome swag. During each of the parties, I couldn’t help but think “How did this year go by so quickly? Is it possible that this kid went from being a little peanut to being a lil’ wild man in just 365 days?”
This year has been filled with love, fear, triumphs, downfalls, kisses, gashes, tears, hugs and everything else that you can imagine. I couldn’t have survived this past year without the love and support of my wife. She’s a rock for me and an amazing mom to Liam. She’s the brains and I’m the guy who acts brawny (but is way too nerdy to ever truly fill that tough guy/dad role). We’ve both changed over the past year but I think it’s for the better and our foundation is stronger than ever.
It’s important to have that foundation because being a parent is a trying experience. No doubt about it. Liam can go from smiles and laughs to tears and screaming on a dime. And sometimes, it’s better to have the other parent step in and handle those situations. God bless all the single parents out there!
That statement aside, the past year has been the greatest year of my life. Watching Liam grow and learn has been a real blessing – one that I have not and will not ever take for granted. First steps, first teeth, using utensils, dismantling our Christmas tree. The everyday things we all take for granted are new to him and I’m grateful to be able to witness that newness.
I’m looking forward to Year 2. Whatever is in store for us, we’re waiting with open arms and happy hearts.
